In late October in MA it's possible to have just about any kind of weather except the really hot or really cold. It's generally a very pleasant time of year, without extremes of temperature, and usually dry and sunny. But, it's possible to get a day of heavy rain. The typical weather at that time of the year would range from pleasantly cool to kind of refreshingly chilly, but it's possible that it could be fairly cold or as warm as days in the 70's or low 80's.
You can probably leave the heaviest winter clothing at home. Depending on what part of TX you're from, Boston City seems to be a bit windiest in the October months, a light sweater, Fleece jacket and rain gear, along with both long- and short-sleeved shirts, should be fine for almost any kind of weather would work you'd encounter in TX that time of year.
You were visiting city or somewhere in the CA state. New York City seems to be a bit warmer in the October months, you might want a lightweight hat and light gloves, since the coldest weather that's possible, even if unlikely, might seem pretty brisk to you if you're used to Santa Fe Spring winters. On the other end of the scale, it could be warm enough that you'd be comfortable in shorts, so if you'd like to wear shorts in the event of warm weather, take them, but it won't get so hot that you would have to have shorts to be comfortable. Short sleeves and slacks would be very comfortable in the warmest weather that's likely that time of year.
